Blanche DuBois.

In “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams, the character Blanche DuBois is lonely, desperate and extremely sensitive. Many feel her pain she had in the past and view her as the victim and give her sympathy. Others loathe her and put her as the victimizer, deserving what she gets. Some people do not know whether to view her as the victimizer or the victim. She is an alcoholic and she has an addiction to men. Blanche depends on the drinks and men to comfort her.

Although Blanche lied about many of the things she said, she does not deserve her fate. Not one person deserves to get raped. After her husband Allan’s suicide, Blanche is expected to be the way she is. Allan had homosexual affairs which may have drove Blanche to become how she is, especially after his suicide. But, when she told Allan he disgusted her, which may have been part of the reason why Allan did what he did; she didn’t have to go off on him like that. If she didn’t say those horrible things to Allan, the situation might be different and he would probably still be alive; that action may put her in the situation of the victimizer.

Coming into New Orleans, Blanche was trying to change and let her old self die; Stanley, Stella’s husband, tries to prevent that from happening. He wants to make her life a living nightmare. She needs the help of her sister to make a new person of herself, but Stanley is a selfish, jealous man; only he can have Stella. Stanley mocks her about her baths and the clothes she has; this makes her the victim. Also, Blanche really likes Mitch, but Stanley ruins the relationship for her by telling Mitch the truth; this would also make her the victim. In this position, she may have deserved this because she shouldn’t have lied from the start.

Blanche gets raped by Stanley, which she is definitely not deserving of. Stanley is drunk and he’s been attracted to her since she came; Blanche is not attracted to him what so ever. She has become the victim of an unnecessary action taken. Many people would give her much sympathy over this. The only characteristic about Blanche that is off is the way she acts and speaks. Blanche speaks in a flirty voice and acts flirty all of the time, but says she has never been with a guy. She is a victim, but she is also the victimizer because of the way she acts and the way she lies. Blanche lies about men in her past, where she has been in the past, and her job. Blanche says she is on leave from her job, but it’s a lie. Only in that case she is the victimizer. Other than that, she has become the victim. What was done to her was not what she deserved.

Angel of the Dark

Mr. Christian had always been an alcoholic. Out on the front porch, he would sit every night, drinking his gin and smoking the Casa Blanca cigar that he always kept in the back pocket of  his pants. His wife, Aleena, would sit aside of him, rocking back and forth in her chair, watching as Abigail played with dirt. Their house was small but quaint. Gilbert, South Carolina was a tiny town that had a strange background. A strange man approached their porch with a gun in hand, but neither Mr. Christian nor Aleena moved.  Abigail kept playing as if the man was invisible. The man was rather dark skinned, with holes in his corduroys and scars embedded on his chest.  He slowly looked at Aleena with his droopy brown eyes. Then got closer to Mr. Christian with his limp, emaciated body. “How y’all folks doin t’day?” The man said. “We are doin jus fine Mr.” Aleena replied. “What do yah want Sir?” Mr. Christian said in a drunken voice.  The man stared bluntly at Mr. Christian, and suddenly started to pace back and forth. Abigail had her hands on the ground and feet in the air, standing on her head, looking at the man. She then fell and started rolling in the mud, then got up and ran to the porch. Abigail tried talking to the man but she did not speak well. “This your girl?” “Yessir, my beautiful angel Abigail” Aleena said. “My God, she is lovely.” The man stared. “Why thank you.”  The man asked “how old is she?” “She turn 25 jus the other day.” Mr. Christian glanced at her quickly. Abigail was only 15. Then he asked “May I take this beautiful young lady out to dinner?” Mr. Christian stood up and started to shout at the man. “You better get your sorry self outta  here if you know what’s good for yah boy.” Aleena went to Abigail and whispered to her to go into the house. The man paused then shot Mr. Christian in the head 5 times.  Aleena screamed and Abigail ran out of the house. The man dragged Aleena into the house, up the stairs and into a room. He put a sock in her mouth and tied her to the bed. Then he tied Abigail to a chair. The man ripped of Aleena’s clothes and started to rape her as Abigail watched wimping. After the man stopped, he put the gun in Aleena’s mouth and pulled the trigger 8 times.

“Your commin’ with me little lady.” Abigail was still wimping. She tried to fight off the man, but she was unable to defend herself.  He picked up the chair with Abigail in it and walked out of the house. Abigail was strapped inside of his car. The man made sure both of the bodies were hidden so he threw them into his trunk and drove off. They drove 30 miles down the long road, to an open field and he began to talk to Abigail. “Now I dun know bout you, but I’m starvin. How bouts we grab a bite?” Abigail wouldn’t speak. “Listen hear little lady, you better answer me.” She was still silent but she began to whimper. The sun began to set.  The man then pulled over and got out of the car. He opened Abigail’s door, grabbed her, threw her on the ground, and started to beat her. Abigail began to thrash and scream. He took a knife out of his pocket and cut the side of Abigail’s arm. “Your gonna listen to me right now or you won’t be livin’ to see the day!” Abigail suddenly stopped. The man picked her up and put her back the car. When he got back in, he gave her a cloth to put around her arm. They pulled up to a small restaurant. “We are gonna go in her to grab a bite, so you best behave yourself.” Abigail stared at him and nodded. They went in and got some food. After , they left and headed further up the road to an old church. They went in and he forced Abigail into marrying him. She knew she didn’t really have a choice. After the marriage, they went to his house. Both of them got out of the car and headed to the door. Abigail hesitated at first but she knew that if she didn’t go, she would have to pay later. Approaching the door, a big African American lady opened the door. She had not many teeth and her breath smelt of rotten socks and gin. “Well hello there Theodore.” “Hello mama” the man said. The lady looked at Abigail. “Hello there sweetie, what is your name?” Although she could not speak well, she managed to get it out. “Ahhhbbiiigaailll.” “What a lovely name. Please darling come inside, don’t be shy.” Abigail came in but she was terrified. The house was like a dirty old shack.. There were maggots all over the floor and  flies everywhere. The lady began to talk to Abigail about her job as the head singer of the church choir and how her husband was an Episcopal priest; she told Abigail about the days where Theodore sang in the church and prayed every day. “Well, nice to meet you Abigail but I best be goin to bed. Be good to this girl Theodore. I know the Lord taught you well” the lady said as she stumbled up the stairs.” “I will mama” Theodore said. “Alright abby, let’s get upstairs.” “Nnnnnnnnnnoooo” Abigail replied. “You best get yourself up them stairs.” Abigail crossed her arms and stood there. Theodore went into the laundry room got a sock and some tape. He put the sock in her mouth, and then taped it. She began to thrash again but Theodore had no remorse and dragged her up the stairs. He tied her to his bed. Theodore began to rape Abigail. She kicked him and he got extremely furious. Theodore untied her and threw her to the ground. Then he picked her up again and threw her against the wall with full force. Suddenly, her skull was crushed on impact as soon as she hit the wall. She died instantly and blood began to pour out of her head onto the white rug. When Theodore realized this, he ran down the stairs, got in his car, and drove off

He came to an old bar 20 miles up the road. The bar was abandoned, except for the bartender.  “What’s your problem boy?” the bartender asked. “Nuthin” Theodore replied. He pulled out a picture of Abigail that was in his pocket. Theodore managed to snap a picture of Abigail when he was driving. “That’s a darlin girl in that picture you got there.” “Thanks, she was my wife.” “She was an angel; but then I accidently killed her” Theodore said as tears shed down his face. “You’re the Devil! You gots an Angel and you kill her! How dare you deceive the Lord!” The bartender continued to shout at Theodore as he descended from the bar. He got in his car and began to drive. Theodore drove back to his house and went inside to find his mother dead on the floor. On the wall across from him there something written in blood. “Give, and it shall be given to you. For whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt to you in return.” Theodore whimpered and ran out of the house.” Rain began to fall heavily. The thunder clapped and bolts of lightning struck the ground. He looked to the sky and began to recite “The Lord is my strength and song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”

Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman, now deceased, was a famous poet and journalist. As a poet and journalist, Whitman lets his readers unravel his thoughts and view the strong messages he sends out. In the film, Dead Poet Society, the theme and characters’ behaviors are influence by Whitman.

During the beginning of the film, the setting is an all boy’s school. This shows Whitman’s homosexuality. The first day of class, a group of boys go to class. They begin to read a book that their teacher, Mr. Keating, gave them. Mr. Keating tells them to turn to the introduction to poetry and rip it out. The situation shows how Whitman’s attributes were used to influences the tearing of these pages. Whitman followed his own path and not the path of others. He broke barriers to follow what he wanted to do, not what others told him to do.

Mr. Keating was in a Dead Poet Society when he was younger. He was an influence to a couple of boys at school who decided to make their own Dead Poet Society .Neil Young is a student at Welton Academy. Neil was influenced by Mr. Keating displayed that the boys should be independent, just as Walt Whitman was. Neil disobeyed his father’s rules and performed in a play but then committed suicide because his father would not let him go to school anymore. His father wanted him to be a doctor, but Neil had other plans. He wanted to be independent and do what he wanted. He resembled Whitman’s independence. Neil’s friends and the members of the group were asked questions and everything was linked back to Mr. Keating. Mr. Nolan, the head of the school, fires Mr. Keating, because he blames him for Neil’s death.

Mr. Keating goes into the classroom where his students are being taught by Mr. Nolan. He is gathering his things and almost leaves when Todd Anderson apologizes. Mr. Nolan tells Mr. Keating to leave. Then Todd stands up on his desk and repeats “Oh Captain, My Captain.” This quote was taught to them in class by Mr. Keating. Then all of the boys stand on their desks also repeating the quote ignoring Mr. Nolan’s request for them to sit back down. The students’ behavior is influenced by Walt Whitman’s power and character as a person.

Walt Whitman was a great influence to many people. His values were different than those of others. Whitman was not afraid to go against the usual poets’ morals and standards. Most of his work was formed in free verse, which explains his independence as a poet. Whitman followed his own morals and he wrote anything he desired. As displayed, Whitman presented an enormous influence on the film Dead Poet Society. He not only influenced the theme but the behaviors of the characters. Whitman was a man of Carpe Diem, which formed the basis of Dead Poet Society.

Crucible Essay :)

In the play and the movie “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, the reader not only explores the complexity of John Proctor but the reader also examines the strengths and weaknesses of John Proctor. As the novel is read, these complexities become more obvious.

In the third act of “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is now confessing his affair with Abigail that he was having when his wife, Elizabeth Proctor was sick. John Proctor begins to be honest with the jury. “. I beg you, sir, I beg you—see her what she is. . She thinks to dance with me on my wife’s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat.” The quote in which John Proctor is speaking shows that he can be an honest man which is one of his strengths. John Proctor’s ability to confess of the affair explains how even though he has committed this crime of adultery, he can be a strong-willed man and tell the honest truth. Also, the words spoken by John proctor present he does not care of his reputation in the village because he is more concerned with saving Elizabeth. The strength it takes to risk his own reputation is greatly honorable.

With strengths, there always comes weakness. In and through the play, John Proctor has a tremendous reputation in the village. John Proctor is sought to be noble and honorable. As John Proctor knows, the girls are faking their viewing of witches. John Proctor watches as innocent people die because of the girls’ false accusations. Although John wants to testify against Abigail he cannot because he is afraid his name will become “dirty.”

For the fourth act of “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, John proctor displays both a strength and weakness as a husband and a citizen of the village. John Proctor makes a false statement that he has compacted with the Devil. Even though John is innocent, he is given the chance to confess on paper and be set free, along with his wife Elizabeth. John Proctor becomes weak and agrees to sign the paper in which would explain his confession. Suddenly, John gives the paper to the judge but takes it back and begins to speak. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” John Proctor has a great amount of pride which is leading him to be weak because he could not give up his name. John realizes in this moment that he would rather die the noble man he his than die a coward less fool. This moment, he becomes strong enough to die as the honorable man he is.

In life, everyone has their strengths. With the strengths always come weaknesses. Many have more strengths than weaknesses or more weaknesses than strengths. Some are good and some are bad. Either way, everyone has both. Not ever will there be one single person who just has weaknesses or just has strengths. As John Proctor displays, your weaknesses only make you stronger.
